Selling AI scripts and automation tools is a real business. The barrier to entry is low — which also means the quality bar is the only thing distinguishing your product from the dozens of similar ones. Validation before shipping is what separates products that get good reviews from products that get refund requests.
The Seller's Responsibility
When you sell a script, you're selling a promise: that this thing does what you say it does, reliably, for the buyer's use case. AI-generated scripts introduce a specific failure mode: they look finished, run without errors, and still produce wrong output in ways that aren't immediately obvious. Your validation process must catch those failures before the buyer does.
The Five-Point Validation Checklist
1. Correctness: Does it do what it claims?
Run the script on ten real examples — not toy examples, not your best cases. Include edge cases: empty inputs, unusual character sets, data that's slightly different from what you optimised for. Document the results. If the output is wrong in more than one in ten cases, the script isn't ready to sell.
2. Reliability: Does it fail gracefully?
What happens when the input is missing? When an API call times out? When the model returns an unexpected format? A script that crashes on bad input is a support ticket waiting to happen. Test for common failure modes and ensure the script either handles them gracefully (clear error message, partial completion, fallback) or documents what valid input looks like.
3. Reproducibility: Will it work on the buyer's setup?
Test on a clean environment — not your development machine with all its configuration. Document every dependency: language version, required packages, API keys, environment variables. If the script uses an API with rate limits, document the limits and their implications. If it requires a paid tier of a tool, say so clearly.
4. Security: Does it handle data safely?
Review the script for: hardcoded credentials (replace with environment variables), logging of sensitive data, insecure handling of user inputs, and dependencies with known vulnerabilities. A buyer who deploys your script in their environment is trusting you with their infrastructure. Don't earn a CVE report.
5. Documentation: Can someone use it without your help?
Write setup instructions, then hand them to someone who hasn't seen the script and time how long it takes them to get it running. If it takes more than 20 minutes, or they hit more than two blockers, the documentation is insufficient. Every question a buyer has to ask is friction. Friction leads to refund requests.
Testing Approaches
Unit tests are ideal for scripted logic — but many AI scripts have outputs that are hard to assert automatically (they're generated text or structured data with variable fields). For these:
- Write test fixtures: input/expected-output pairs for known cases
- Implement a simple scoring rubric: did the output contain the required elements?
- Use a reviewer (human or another AI) to rate output quality on a sample
- Run a 24-hour endurance test on batch processing scripts to catch memory leaks and rate limit issues
Documentation Standards
A minimum viable README for a paid script includes:
- What the script does (one sentence)
- What it doesn't do (be honest)
- Requirements (language, dependencies, API keys, account tiers)
- Installation steps
- Usage examples with real input and expected output
- Known limitations
- How to get help (email, discussion forum)
Refund-Proof Packaging
The best defence against refund requests is a product page that accurately represents what the script does. Show real output from real inputs. Be explicit about limitations. Let buyers know what setup effort is required before purchase. A buyer who knows what they're getting and still buys it has consented to the product. A buyer who expected more than was delivered has a legitimate grievance. Manage expectations before the sale — not after.
