AI coding assistants are the fastest way to become a more productive developer — and the fastest way to introduce subtle bugs if you don't know how to use them. The difference between the two outcomes is almost entirely about how you interact with the tool at each stage of skill development. Here's a framework built around that progression.

What AI Coding Assistants Can and Cannot Do

Can do well: autocomplete, boilerplate generation, converting logic between languages, explaining unfamiliar code, writing tests for code you understand, generating documentation, finding common patterns for common problems.

Cannot do reliably: understand the full context of your codebase, correctly assess edge cases in complex business logic, produce secure code for sensitive operations without explicit instruction, and keep up with framework versions released after their training cutoff.

These capabilities are roughly consistent across leading tools. Knowing the limits shapes how you use them.

Phase 1: Code Completion (Weeks 1–4)

Start with inline completion — accepting or rejecting suggestions as you type. At this phase:

  • Accept suggestions for obvious boilerplate and standard patterns
  • Reject or edit suggestions for anything involving business logic you understand better than the tool
  • Read every suggestion before accepting it — even one line
  • Use the tool's explanation feature liberally: "explain this function" is a learning shortcut

At the end of this phase, you should have a clear sense of where the tool is reliable and where it invents plausible-looking code that doesn't work.

Phase 2: Code Explanation (Weeks 5–8)

Start using the tool to understand code you didn't write. Paste unfamiliar functions and ask for explanations. Use it to navigate legacy codebases. Ask "what does this function do, and what are the edge cases it doesn't handle?"

This phase trains you to evaluate AI output critically — because you can verify its explanations against the code itself. If the explanation is wrong, you learn where the tool hallucinates technical details. This knowledge makes you a better user in phase 3.

Phase 3: Full Generation with Review (Weeks 9+)

Ask the tool to generate entire functions or modules from a specification. Your responsibility shifts:

  • Write a precise specification first (inputs, outputs, constraints, error handling)
  • Review the generated code as you would review a junior developer's PR: does the logic match the spec? Are edge cases handled? Is error handling present and correct?
  • Run the generated code against tests you wrote — not tests the AI generated
  • Check for common AI-generated code issues: unused variables, inefficient patterns, missing null checks, insecure handling of user input

Security Considerations

AI-generated code has well-documented security patterns to watch for:

  • SQL injection: Generated database queries that concatenate user input without parameterisation
  • Hardcoded credentials: API keys, passwords, or tokens in generated code
  • Missing input validation: Functions that assume inputs are safe or correctly formatted
  • Outdated dependencies: The model may suggest libraries with known vulnerabilities

Run a security-focused code review on any AI-generated code that handles user input, authentication, or external API calls. Don't assume the generated code is safe because it looks clean.

The Right Mental Model
