Wix holds 6% of the CMS market with a promise that is hard to resist: build a website without touching code. Drag, drop, publish. But convenience has a ceiling, and Wix hits it fast. What starts as easy becomes a cage — one you cannot export your way out of.

If your ambitions extend beyond a digital brochure, here is why Joomla is the platform that grows with you instead of trapping you.

The Lock-In Nobody Mentions

Wix’s own support page states it plainly: “Wix sites cannot be exported or embedded into another platform.”

That is not a limitation. That is a business model. Your design, your layout, your CMS data, your app integrations, your booking records, your store orders — all locked inside Wix’s proprietary rendering engine. You can export blog posts as XML and manually download images one by one. Everything else requires rebuilding from scratch.

Joomla? Database dump, file backup, move to any host. Your site is yours — always.

Performance: The JavaScript Tax

Wix loads 1–3 MB of JavaScript before your content even appears. Their platform code, analytics, A/B testing scripts, and rendering engine all execute before a visitor sees a single word. Typical mobile Largest Contentful Paint: 4–8 seconds. Google recommends under 2.5.

Time to Interactive on mobile? Often 8–15 seconds. That is not a website. That is a loading screen.

A properly configured Joomla site with server-side caching serves pages in under a second with Core Web Vitals firmly in the green.

SEO: Client-Side Rendering Hurts

Wix sites are heavily JavaScript-dependent. Google’s crawler can render JavaScript, but it does so in a second wave of indexing — meaning your content is discovered later than server-rendered HTML. Other search engines (Bing, DuckDuckGo) may struggle more.

You cannot access robots.txt directly, cannot submit a custom sitemap, cannot control canonical URLs meaningfully, and cannot inject custom structured data without Wix’s interface getting in the way.

Joomla serves real HTML. Search engines see your content immediately. Full control over URLs, metadata, schema markup, and sitemaps.

The Customization Ceiling

Wix’s editor is the ceiling. No raw CSS access. No custom templates. No PHP, Python, or any server-side language. Wix Velo (their coding environment) runs sandboxed JavaScript with rate limits and no npm packages.

You cannot install arbitrary extensions. You cannot create custom content types with relational fields. You cannot query a database. You cannot set up a cron job. You cannot SSH into anything.

Joomla gives you full access to PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, your MySQL database, CLI tools, and over 6,000 extensions. The gap is not incremental — it is categorical.

User Management: Nonexistent vs. Enterprise-Grade

Wix offers fixed roles (Admin, Editor, Writer) with no customization. No per-page permissions, no custom user groups, no ACL. Member areas require paid add-ons with member count limits.

Joomla’s ACL system supports unlimited custom user groups with per-category, per-action permissions. Universities, government agencies, and multi-author publications rely on it daily.

Multilingual: Add-On vs. Core

Wix Multilingual is an add-on with machine translation, no professional translation workflow, no XLIFF export, and incomplete app support. Not all Wix features translate properly.

Joomla includes complete multilingual infrastructure in core: language packs, content associations, per-language menus, hreflang tags, and RTL support. Professional-grade, zero extra cost.

Pricing

Wix Light starts at $17/month. The Core plan at $29/month. Business (needed for payments) at $36/month. Business Elite at $159/month. And Wix has raised prices on existing customers mid-contract.

Joomla is free. Hosting costs $5–$20/month. The total cost of running a Joomla site for a year is often less than two months of Wix Business.

When Wix Makes Sense

For a personal portfolio or a simple landing page where performance, SEO, and long-term ownership do not matter, Wix gets you online in an afternoon. It is genuinely easy to start with.

But “easy to start” and “easy to grow” are different things entirely.

The Bottom Line

Wix is a website rental with a drag-and-drop interface. Joomla is a website you own with no ceiling on what you can build. One is convenient. The other is capable.

Choose based on where you want to be in three years, not three hours.
